RICHLAND, Wash. – Energy Northwest, Powin Energy, the Bonneville Power Administration, City of Richland, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and others are testing and evaluating a battery storage system that could help the Pacific Northwest store excess wind energy produced when there’s little demand for power and utilize this electricity during times of peak power demand.
Media are invited to attend a media event on July 1 starting at 12 p.m. to learn more about the project. The event will be at Energy Northwest’s Nine Canyon Wind Project, 92308 S. Nine Canyon Rd., Kennewick, Wash. (see map included for directions). Reporters in attendance will be able see first-hand a large, advanced battery system that is encased in a portable shipping container. Following a brief overview of the project, representatives from key participating organizations will offer short comments.
A look inside one of the wind turbines at Nine Canyon will also be available immediately afterward.
Project Background: The Bonneville Power Administration funded this project to work with project partners to evaluate and measure the potential benefits of large-scale energy storage solutions. Storage systems such as this battery could help the Northwest better integrate renewable power into the Northwest power grid.
