Excellence in Governance

Energy Northwest employees implemented the Excellence in Performance initiative agency wide in July 2011.

During 2013, the executive board looked internally to strengthen their performance as a governing board to hold each other to the highest standards of public power and the energy industry; and to conduct business in a manner that best serves the interests of all Northwest ratepayers.

In early 2014, the board finalized the Energy Northwest Executive Board Excellence in Governance Model.

The model begins with guiding principles which are positive, general principles that serve as the foundation of how the group conducts business – and leads the agency – as a governing board: “Strategic, Intrusive, Accountable, Leadership.”

Three interdependent tiers of attributes guide board decisions:

  • Tier 1 – Board Obligations to Excellence commits the board to sustain good stewardship of agency assets as public power advocates.

  • Tier 2 – Board Member Actions for Excellence define individual and group excellence behaviors that significantly impact overall agency performance.

  • Tier 3 – Board Enablers of Excellence provides assurance methods to achieve predictable governance outcomes by promoting consistency in board action.

Since implementation of Excellence in Governance, the model has gained regional interest. The agency has conduted multiple workshops with utilities at their request, to help them create their own Excellence in Governance models; and requests continue to be made. If your utility is interested in participating in one of these one-day workshops, please contact Carla Martinez or Angela Smith at BoardRelations@energy-northwest.com.

“I did not realize up front that we were getting such an impressive and an
entire package. I am so impressed
with Energy Northwest.  This is great information and will be very helpful to the Inland board as we move forward together.”
