Energy Northwest welcomed 19 high school students this summer as part of the Tri-Cities STEM Career Academy, a weeklong program that introduces students to hands-on careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
During their visit at Columbia Generating Station, students learned about radiation sources, explored mockups of plant equipment and learned about the nuclear fuel cycle. They met with employees to learn about career opportunities in nuclear energy and took a tour of the cooling towers.
The day also included a career panel and a simulator presentation featuring X‑energy’s Xe‑100 small modular reactor design at Washington State University Tri‑Cities’ Institute for Northwest Energy Futures.
This year was the fourth year Energy Northwest co-hosted the academy, a partnership that aligns closely with Energy Northwest’s commitment to workforce development and inspiring the next generation of clean‑energy professionals. Through hands-on learning, industry exposure, and direct engagement with professionals, this program continues to foster curiosity and enthusiasm for STEM careers, something Energy Northwest is proud to support.
The Tri-Cities STEM Career Academy is a Foundational for Water and Energy Education (FWEE) event, hosted by local innovators in clean energy, agriculture, and conservation. Benton PUD and Washington Grain Commission serve as anchor sponsors, alongside Benton Conservation District, Franklin Conservation District, City of Richland Energy Services, Educational Service District 123, Energy Northwest, Kennewick School District, and Benton REA partners.
