Barney Burke was appointed to the Jefferson County Public Utility District Board of Commissioners in 2009. Commissioner Burke was elected to a six-year term in 2010 and currently serves as board secretary. He was appointed to the Energy Northwest Board of Directors in 2012 and was elected as the board vice president in 2015.  

Prior to moving to Port Townsend in 2000, Commissioner Burke had a 20-year career in planning and economic development in the San Francisco Bay Area. He managed the redevelopment agency for the city of Mountain View, Calif., and co-chaired the Economic Development Roundtable for Joint Venture: Silicon Valley. Subsequently, he was an award-winning reporter and photographer for the Port Townsend Leader newspaper for 10 years, and continues to work as a freelance photographer. 

Commissioner Burke earned a bachelor's degree at the University of California-Berkeley and a master's degree from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. He is a past board member of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce.
