Barney Burke has served on the board of commissioners of Jefferson PUD since 2009. Jefferson PUD negotiated the purchase of Puget Sound Energy’s Jefferson County electric facilities in 2010 and began operating that system in 2013. Mr. Burke was appointed to the Energy Northwest Board of Directors in 2012.
Prior to moving to Port Townsend, Wash. in 2000, Mr. Burke had a 20-year career in planning and economic development in the San Francisco Bay Area. He managed the redevelopment agency of the City of Mountain View, Calif., and co-chaired the Economic Development Roundtable for Joint Venture: Silicon Valley. Subsequently, he was an award-winning reporter and photographer for the Port Townsend Leader newspaper for 10 years and continues to work as a freelance photographer.
Mr. Burke earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of California, Berkeley and a master’s degree at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is a past board member of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Burke helped launch Port Townsend’s nonprofit radio station, KPTZ 91.9 FM, where he hosts a blues program on Friday nights.
